Sanātana App Privacy Policy

What Sanātana collects, who receives it, and how to get it back or erase it.

Last updated: August 2026 · App: Sanātana · Developer: Tappect · Package: com.tappect.sanatana

In short

  • We collect your account details, your birth details, your practice activity in the app, and crash diagnostics. Section 2 lists every item.
  • Your birth details are never sent to the AI provider. Only your rashi (zodiac sign), the panchang and the date are. See section 4.2.
  • No advertising, no ad SDK, no analytics SDK beyond crash reporting, and we never sell your data.
  • You can export everything from Settings, and delete your account in the app or from the web — with a 30-day grace period.

This summary is for convenience only. The full policy below is what applies.

1. Introduction

Welcome to Sanātana, a spiritual wellness application developed by Tappect. We are committed to protecting your privacy and handling your data with respect and transparency.

This privacy policy explains how Sanātana ("we", "our", or "the app") collects, uses, stores, and protects your information when you use our mobile application.

Sanātana is operated by Tappect and available on Android and iOS platforms. This policy applies to all users of the Sanātana application.

2. Information We Collect

This section lists everything Sanātana collects. If a category of data is not named here, we do not collect it.

2.1 Account Information

An account is required to use the app. You can sign up with an email address and password, or sign in with Google or Sign in with Apple. Authentication is handled by Supabase. We collect:

  • Email address — the address you sign in with
  • Name — if you provide one, or if it is supplied by Google or Apple during sign-in
  • User ID — an account identifier we generate, used to link your data to your account

Passwords are handled by our authentication provider. They are stored as salted hashes and we never see or store your password in readable form. If you use Sign in with Apple and choose to hide your email, we only ever receive Apple's private relay address.

2.2 Birth Details (for horoscope and rashi)

The horoscope feature needs to know your rashi (zodiac sign). To work that out, we collect:

  • Date of birth — required for the horoscope feature
  • Time of birth — optional, for a more precise chart
  • Place of birth — optional, entered by you as text

Place of birth is typed in by you. The app does not read your device location to obtain it, and does not request location permission at all.

Your birth details are stored for your account, but they are not sent to our AI provider. They are used on your device and on our servers to derive your rashi. Only the derived rashi, the panchang for the day and the date are sent to the AI provider to generate a horoscope. Section 4.2 explains this in detail.

2.3 App Activity

So that your practice is saved and synced across your devices, we store what you do in the app:

  • Sadhana logs — the daily practices you tick off, and your streaks
  • Meditation history — sessions, durations and completion
  • Japa and mala counts, vrat logs and sankalpas
  • Diya progress — intentions you set, fuel earned and how long your lamp stays lit
  • Favourites and reading history — the texts, verses, aartis and teachings you save or open
  • Achievements and Gyan Path lesson and quiz progress
  • Audio analytics — which mantras, bhajans and aartis you play, and for how long
  • Verse analytics — which verses you view
  • Your preferences — chosen deity, language, dashboard layout, reminder times and notification settings
  • Messages you send to the AI spiritual guide, and the responses

This activity data is tied to your account so that it can be shown back to you. It is used to run the features you are using and to personalise content in the app — not to build an advertising or marketing profile.

2.4 Crash Logs, Diagnostics and Device Identifier

Sanātana uses Firebase Crashlytics, a Google service, to find out when the app crashes so we can fix it. When a crash or serious error happens, Crashlytics collects:

  • Crash logs — the stack trace and the state of the app at the moment it failed
  • Diagnostics — device model, operating system version, app version, language, and whether the device was low on memory or storage
  • A device identifier — a Crashlytics installation identifier used to group multiple crashes from the same device together

This data is sent to Google. It is the only automatic reporting in the app. Sanātana contains no advertising SDK and no product analytics SDK — we do not track your behaviour across other apps or websites.

2.5 Voice Input (Microphone)

The app can accept a spoken question instead of a typed one. Microphone access (android.permission.RECORD_AUDIO on Android, NSMicrophoneUsageDescription on iOS) is requested only for this.

  • Speech is transcribed by your device's own speech recognition — Apple's on iOS, Google's on Android — under those companies' privacy policies, not by us
  • We receive only the resulting text, and only if you then send it
  • We do not record, store or transmit audio. No recording is kept on our servers
  • You can refuse microphone permission and use the app normally with text input

2.6 What We Do Not Collect

  • Location. The app does not request location permission and does not collect GPS or precise or approximate location
  • Contacts, photos, calendar or files
  • Payment or financial information. The app is free, with no in-app purchases and no subscriptions, so there is nothing to bill
  • Health or fitness data from Apple Health or Google Fit
  • Advertising identifiers (IDFA or Android Advertising ID)

3. How We Use Your Information

We use the collected information to:

  • Provide Core Features: Enable account creation, authentication, and personalized spiritual content
  • Track Your Progress: Save your spiritual journey data (mantras completed, vrats observed, meditation sessions)
  • Personalize Experience: Customize content recommendations based on your interests and practices
  • Enable Voice Input: Turn a spoken question into text using your device's own speech recognition
  • Generate Your Horoscope: Derive your rashi from your date of birth, and use that rashi to produce daily and period horoscopes
  • Send Notifications: Deliver reminders for rituals, daily verses, and panchang updates (only if you enable notifications)
  • Fix Crashes: Use crash logs and diagnostics to find and repair defects in the app
  • Provide AI-Powered Guidance: Send the questions you type to the AI spiritual guide to an AI provider so a response can be generated (see section 4)
  • Respond to You: Answer your support, privacy and account requests

We do not sell your personal information or your spiritual practice data, and we never have. We do not share it with data brokers, we do not use it for advertising, and we do not use it to build a profile of you for any purpose outside the app.

4. Third-Party Services and What Each One Receives

4.1 Our Providers

We use a small number of providers to run the app. This is the complete list, and what each one receives:

  • Supabase — hosting, authentication and the database. Receives your account details, birth details and all of your app activity, because that is where your data is stored.
    View Supabase Privacy Policy
  • Google Sign-In — only if you choose to sign in with Google. Google confirms your identity to us and provides your email address and name.
    View Google Privacy Policy
  • Sign in with Apple — only if you choose it. Apple confirms your identity and provides an email address, which is a private relay address if you asked Apple to hide yours.
    View Apple Privacy Policy
  • Firebase Crashlytics (Google) — receives crash logs, diagnostics and a device identifier when the app crashes, as described in section 2.4. It does not receive your birth details, your practice data or your AI conversations.
View Firebase Privacy and Security information
  • Google Gemini — the AI model behind the AI features. It is never called directly from your device; requests go through a server-side proxy we operate, which holds the API key. What it receives is set out in section 4.2.
    View Google Privacy Policy
  • Apple and Google speech recognition — only if you use voice input, and only to turn your speech into text on your device, under their own privacy policies. We receive the text, not the audio.

There are no other third parties. In particular, there is no advertising network, no ad SDK, no attribution or marketing SDK, and no product analytics SDK in the app.

4.2 What Is and Is Not Sent to the AI Provider

Sanātana has two kinds of AI feature, and they send different things. In both cases the request goes through our own server-side proxy rather than from your device to Google directly.

AI spiritual guide (chat)

  • The messages you type — or dictate — are sent to Google Gemini so that a response can be generated.
  • Because your message is sent as you wrote it, please do not include information you would not want processed by an AI provider.

AI horoscopes

  • Sent: your rashi (zodiac sign), the panchang for the day — tithi, nakshatra and related calculations — and the date.
  • Not sent: your date of birth, your time of birth, your place of birth, your name, your email address and your user ID.

To be plain about it: your birth details are stored, but they are not shared with the AI provider. They are used to work out which of the twelve rashis you are, and to identify your cached horoscope on your own device. Only the resulting rashi leaves for the AI provider — a value shared by roughly one twelfth of the population, which does not identify you.

Each of these providers has its own privacy policy, and we recommend reading the ones that apply to you.

5. Data Storage and Security

We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your data:

  • All data is encrypted in transit. Every connection between the app and our servers uses TLS (HTTPS), and the same applies to the calls our proxy makes to the AI provider
  • Data is encrypted at rest on our hosting provider's infrastructure
  • Passwords are stored only as salted hashes, never in plain text, and are never visible to us
  • Access to your records is restricted by per-user database rules, so one account cannot read another account's data
  • Our AI provider API key is held server-side only and is never shipped inside the app
  • Backups are encrypted and access to them is restricted

Voice input: audio never reaches our servers at all. Speech is transcribed by your device's own operating system, and only the resulting text is sent — and only if you choose to send it.

While we take security seriously, no method of electronic storage or transmission is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security of your information.

6. Your Rights and Choices

You have the following rights regarding your data:

6.1 Access and Portability

  • Export your data yourself, in the app, from Settings → Account & Data → Export Data to JSON. The export covers your profile, sadhana logs, meditation history, diya progress, streaks, favourites, reading history and achievements. You can copy it to the clipboard or save and share it as a .json file
  • If you can no longer open the app, email us and we will send you a copy of your data

6.2 Correction and Updates

  • Update your profile information directly in the app settings
  • Correct any inaccurate data

6.3 Deletion

  • In the app: Settings → Account & Data → Delete Account. The request is recorded straight away and you are signed out
  • On the web, if you can no longer open the app, from the account deletion page
  • There is a 30-day grace period before anything is erased, so an accidental request can be undone
  • Signing back in during those 30 days cancels the deletion and restores your account intact. The app tells you a request is pending and offers to withdraw it. You can also email us to cancel
  • After the 30 days, deletion is permanent and cannot be undone
  • Encrypted backup copies are removed within 90 days

6.4 Permission Controls

  • Microphone: Revoke microphone access in device settings; voice input will be disabled but text input remains available
  • Notifications: Disable push notifications in app settings or device settings
  • Location: The app does not request or use location data

To exercise any of these rights or for data-related questions, contact us at hello@tappect.com

7. Data Retention

We retain your data as follows:

  • Account Data: Retained while your account is active
  • Birth Details: Retained while your account is active. You can clear or change them in the app at any time
  • Spiritual Practice Data: Retained indefinitely to preserve your spiritual journey, unless you delete your account
  • AI Conversations: Retained with your account so you can see your history, and removed when your account is deleted
  • Audio Recordings: Never stored. Speech is transcribed on your device and no audio reaches us
  • Crash Logs and Diagnostics: Held by Firebase Crashlytics under Google's own retention schedule, and not kept by us separately
  • Deleted Account Data: Erased 30 days after the deletion request; backup copies deleted within 90 days

Anonymised, aggregated counts that cannot be linked back to you — for example, how many people opened a particular aarti — may be kept after deletion. These contain nothing that identifies you.

8. Children's Privacy

Sanātana is suitable for users of all ages, including children under 13. However, we require parental consent for users under 13 years old.

If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided personal information without your consent, please contact us at hello@tappect.com and we will delete the information promptly.

9. International Data Transfers

Your information may be stored and processed in servers located in different countries, including the United States. By using Sanātana, you consent to the transfer of your data to these locations.

We ensure that all international transfers comply with applicable data protection laws and that your data receives an adequate level of protection.

10. Sharing and Disclosure

We do not sell or rent your personal information, and we do not share it for advertising or marketing. We share data only in these limited circumstances:

  • Service Providers: The providers listed in section 4 — hosting and authentication, sign-in providers, crash reporting and the AI provider — each receiving only what section 4 describes
  • With Your Consent: When you explicitly choose to share a verse or piece of content out of the app yourself
  • Legal Requirements: When required by law, court order, or government authority
  • Business Transfers: In the event of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets (users will be notified)
  • Safety and Security: To protect the rights, property, or safety of Tappect, our users, or the public

To restate the point in section 4.2, because it is the question we are asked most: your birth details are not shared with the AI provider.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, features, or legal requirements.

When we make material changes, we will:

  • Update the "Last updated" date at the top of this policy
  • Notify you through the app or via email
  • Request your consent if required by law

Your continued use of Sanātana after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
