Frequently asked questions
Is Sanātana free? Are there ads or in-app purchases?
Sanātana is completely free. There are no in-app purchases, no subscriptions, no paid tiers and no advertising. Every feature is available to every signed-in user.
Do I need an account to use the app?
Yes. An account is required so that your sadhana history, streaks, favourites, diya progress and Gyan Path progress can be saved and synced to your devices. You can sign up with an email address and password, or sign in with Google or Apple.
Which languages does the app support, and how do I change mine?
You choose your language during first-time setup. The app currently supports English, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Gujarati and Kannada, with more Indian languages in progress.
To change it later, go to Settings → General → Language. Please note that the in-app switcher currently offers English and Hindi only — the other languages are still being rolled out to it. If you need to switch to a language that is not yet listed, email us and we will help.
How do reminders and notifications work?
All reminders are scheduled locally on your device — we do not send marketing push notifications. You can turn each type on or off in Settings → Notifications → Notification Settings, where you will find:
- A morning digest at a time you choose
- Prayer time reminders (Pratah, Madhyahna and Sayam, each with its own time)
- Dincharya daily routine nudges
- Fasting and vrat reminders, including a set number of days in advance
- Streak-at-risk reminders and milestone notifications
- Quiet hours, so nothing arrives during a window you set
Because reminders are scheduled by your device's operating system, battery optimisation or restricted notification permissions can delay or suppress them. If reminders stop arriving, check that notifications are still allowed for Sanātana in your device settings and that the time is not inside your quiet hours.
Does the app work offline?
Some of it does. Without an internet connection you can still use:
- Gyan Path lessons and quizzes, which are built into the app
- The panchang and festival calendar, which is calculated on your device
- Your diya — changes are saved locally and synced when you are back online
- Your most recent horoscope, which is cached for the day
An internet connection is needed for the sacred text library, saints and teachings, the mantra and aarti audio (which streams rather than being bundled into the app), the AI guide, and syncing between devices.
Audio will not play. What should I check?
Mantra, aarti and bhajan audio is streamed, so it needs a working internet connection — it is not stored inside the app. If a track will not start:
- Check that you are online, and try switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data
- Check your device is not on silent, and turn the media volume up
- Close and reopen the app
Playback continues in the background and can be controlled from your lock screen. If a specific track still fails, email us the name of it and we will look into that recording.
How does the diya and its fuel work?
The diya is a virtual lamp you light with an intention. It stays lit using fuel, which is measured in minutes of burn time and earned through your practice — for example lighting the diya, completing a mala, finishing a Gyan Path lesson, reading a verse, meditating, or observing a vrat.
Most activities award fuel once per day. Practising at auspicious times or on auspicious days earns a higher award, and completing a full morning or evening routine adds a bonus. Fuel added while the lamp is still burning extends the flame; if the lamp has gone out, it relights from the next fuel you earn. The flame's appearance reflects how much fuel is left.
How do streaks work, and why did mine reset?
A streak counts consecutive calendar days on which you did that practice. If your most recent activity was today or yesterday, the streak continues. If a full day passes with no activity, the streak breaks and starts again at one the next time you practise.
Your longest streak is recorded separately and is not lost when a current streak breaks. There is currently no streak freeze or repair, and streaks are worked out from your device's calendar days, so travelling across time zones can shift when a day rolls over.
Is the AI guide, or the horoscope, real advice?
No. The AI spiritual guide, the horoscopes and the dietary reflections are generated by AI and are offered for personal reflection and inspiration only. They are not professional, medical, psychological, legal or financial advice, and AI can be confidently wrong.
Please do not start, stop or change a fast, diet, medication or treatment based on what the app says — speak to a doctor or a qualified practitioner. If you are in distress or thinking about harming yourself, contact your local emergency services or a crisis helpline. See the Terms of Service for the full position.
Can I export my data?
Yes. Go to Settings → Account & Data → Export Data. You can copy your data to the clipboard as JSON, or save and share it as a .json file. It is worth exporting before deleting your account, because deleted practice history cannot be restored.
How do I delete my account?
From inside the app, go to Settings → Account & Data → Delete Account. Deletion is scheduled with a 30-day grace period, so an accidental request can be cancelled by signing back in or emailing us before the 30 days are up.
If you cannot open the app, you can request deletion by email instead. Full details of what is deleted are on the account deletion page.
I cannot sign in to my account. What now?
First check that you are using the same sign-in method you originally registered with — an account created with Google or Apple has to be opened the same way, not with an email and password.
If you previously requested account deletion, signing back in during the 30-day grace period will offer to restore your account. If you still cannot get in, email us from the address on the account and we will help you recover access.
